Best Buy no longer carrying CD’s!
In an expected, yet unexpected turn of events, Best Buy announced they would no longer be carrying CD’s in any of their retail locations. Starting this summer, July 1st more specifically, Best Buy will be pulling CD’s from all of it’s stores. Best Buy, being one of the leading electronics retailers in the world, leading the charge into a digital future for music is a very strong move.
Streaming platforms have cemented their position in the music industry for the past few years, and now the fruits of it’s labor are really showing. With CD’s sales totaling roughly 8o Million last year, 10 percent of roughly 800 million sales back in 2001, it’s clear that the new generation isn’t consuming music in the same ways anymore. Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, and all the other major streaming services may no longer have to worry about physical sales competing with digital sales and streams.
Even more interesting, Best Buy has stated they will continue to carry Vinyl records in select stores for at least the next 2 years. What do you think, are physical CD’s important or is it all about the accessibility digital platforms provide? Leave a comment below and let us know!
